Short Story: The Ancient Song: Part II

The Ancient Song

Read Part I

Part II:

With her mind racing fast, Tia called Adam, Michael’s brother to see what’s got into him to be drinking at 6:00 a.m in the morning. Time was of the essence and she had a bigger fish to fry.

She paced around the room, finding the chirping birds an annoyance. She needed absolute silence to put her mind to work. After breakfast, she sat quietly for a while, putting her thoughts in order. Left Michael a text and focused on the mystery in hand.

She recited the verse that the man had spoken, absorbing it.

‘the birds sang the ancient song,
the final wave is coming along,

the one responsible for undoing the wrong,
should return the rose where it belongs.’

The first line:

‘The birds sang the ancient song’…

Deduction: Since it’s all about me, as he implied, then the ancient song could mean a childhood lullaby that has been passed on in the family but then the birds don’t make sense. Could the birds be the members of the family?

The second line:

‘the final wave is coming along’…

Deduction: Could it mean death or could it mean a certain event?
This one thing must be common to all the members for it to connect with the first line so that rules out death as grandma is alive and well.

The day was passing by at the rate of 15 hours a day.

The third line:

‘the one responsible for undoing the wrong’…

Deduction: If I’m the one, then could it have something to do with any of my previous cases. Of course, what else could it be! But then, the interpretation of the other lines would be meaningless.
Could it be related to my parents? Should I talk to Grammy about it?

She was in an entirely different league from her family. Her parents were scientists who died when an experiment went wrong when she was 10 years old. Her grandma took her in and raised her. At the age of 19, she moved out and went on to pursue her dream of becoming a detective.

She set that thought aside and focused on the final line:

‘should return the rose where it belongs’…

Deduction: This one’s the simplest of all. He wants something that I have which should be returned to the place where it belongs.

With the dusk falling, she had her deductions but the one thing that still troubled her was ‘the wrong’ in the verse.

With her fourth cup of coffee in her hand, she looked at the saffron sky wondering what she has got herself into this time around. When the phone rang, she took a deep breath and readied herself for another strange conversation.

‘I assume you already have a theory.’ said the deep voice, with a strange playfulness which got on her nerves.

‘You’re damn right I do but it doesn’t make any sense, at all.’ she spoke, carefully.

‘Well, I hope you’re as good as people say because you don’t have time to play around.’ she heard him say while she wished she could knock that smirk off his face.

‘Instead of doubting my ability, it’d be better if you tell me what’s going on here and who exactly are you?’ she spat back.
‘My identity isn’t your concern. A life is in danger. And you’re the only one who can save the tragedy from happening.
‘ his tone changed, entirely.

‘Who’s life is in danger? And how do you know about it?’ her heart raced.

the one that hides in a disguise
is found at the ninth hour from sunrise
the rose shall return to its fate
find the way before it’s too late’ recited the deep voice, again.

‘Another one?!’ gosh, not again.

’24 hours remain.’ he spoke the final words.

‘Wait!’ and the line went dead.
