The relation between my craving for reading and the days left for exams is inversely proportional. The nearer the exams come, the urge to read intensifies. To satisfy this craving, there has to be a special book. One, on reading which I don’t feel like I have wasted my time that I could have employed in studying.
The book that could keep up to my expectations is ‘Skylines’ which is a short story compilation. So, here is my review of ‘Skylines’ by Neelam Saxena Chandra-

Plot- This book is not a compilation of several stories, but is a compilation of the various aspects of womanhood. The author brings to you, in each story, a different shade of a woman’s life and how she deals with it. Each story has an intriguing plot and there is no sign of redundancy. Fourteen different stories portraying fourteen women, all fighting their own devils and figuring out their lives. From love to hatred and inspiration to depression, Neelam has managed to capture all the emotions in these short, but power-packed stories. The author has sent out strong social messages with every story. She deserves to be applauded for the flamboyant portrayal of women in her stories.
Pros:
- Fresh concept.
- No redundancy in plots.
- Out of the league.
- Simple yet powerful.
Cons:
- Basic English. Repetitive phrases.
- Poorly phrased sentences and dialogs.
- Some stories seem unfinished.
- Creative content, not rich.
My favorite Story: ‘The Reverberations’
Many girls fall prey to the misbehavior of the roadside Romeos or the college bullies. The girl in this story fought back and showed those bastards who raped her that the body they dared to pollute inhibits a soul that has the power to destroy them.
Neelam Saxena Chandra is an engineer by profession and works with Indian Railways. She has two novels, one novella, four poetry books, one short story collection and four children’s story books to her credit, besides more than six hundred published stories / poems. Neelam has been awarded for her works by Gulzar ji in a poetry Contest organized by American Society, by Children Book Trust in 2009, and by Ministry of Railways (Premchand Puraskar). She also received the Rabindranath Tagore International Award for poetry. She was the lyricist for the song which won the Popular Choice Award in Folk Fusion category in Radio City Freedom Award.
The book is a fresh change from tragic and cheesy love stories. I would gladly recommend it. Go on now, get your copy and explore the emotions of a woman from childhood to old age.
