I’ve often been told that I’m not a road trip person because I tend to sleep a lot during such long trips on the road. In my defence, it’s not me; it’s the uncomfortable vehicle. Choosing the right road trip vehicle is essential to enjoy the time spent in the car. It’s crucial to understand your requirement and decide if you’d need an SUV or Sedan for road trips. Here are some tips from a person who’d love to go on a road trip in the right car:
1. Road Condition-
An essential element of road trips is the road condition. And when it comes to bad roads, SUV’s are the answer. SUV’s have been created to traverse rocky and damaged paths with their large wheel sizes and stiffer suspension.
Sedans are comfortable, leisurely and have a relatively softer suspension, but when it comes to bad roads, be ready to take your Sedan for maintenance.
If you are road-tripping in urban areas and on the city roads and highways, Sedans are preferable.
2. Fuel Efficiency-
The first question in everyone’s mind when they inspect a new car is how much mileage does it offer. For road trips, checking the fuel efficiency of the vehicle is imperative to save cost on fuel.
Sedans are highly fuel-efficient and offer better mileage as compared to SUV’s. While an SUV covers a 100 meters in 15 seconds, a Sedan would cover the same area in 10 seconds.

3. Space-
Space and comfort go hand in hand when it comes to road trips. Although it largely depends on the number of passengers, the need for the storage space, legroom and headroom should be carefully looked over.
Sedans offer considerable storage, separate storage compartment, and more legroom.
SUV’s on the other hand, offer lots of storage space, but the storage and passenger compartments are the same. SUV’s also provides better headroom, but relatively less legroom.
4. Passengers-
Choosing the vehicle depends mostly on the number of passengers. If the number of passengers is three or less than three, a Sedan would be the right choice given that the other factors concur.
However, for family road trips, for 4 or more passengers, an SUV is the obvious choice.
Slightly more room doesn’t hurt, but less room can be uncomfortable and claustrophobic. Choose wisely.
Pro Tip: Always make sure that the car can seat at least one more person than the actual number of passengers.
