‘Forgiveness Is A Virtue Of The Brave. Are You Brave?’ #1000Speak For Compassion

“The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.”
Mahatma Gandhi

What is forgiveness?

In the event of being wronged by someone, to overcome that hurt inflicted upon us by the other person and to not hold a grudge for that act is forgiveness. To let go, to leave the anger behind is forgiveness.

Is it hard to Forgive?

Most of us find it hard to forgive someone and move on after being mistreated by them unless of course, we love them because then, it becomes even harder.

Like, holding a grudge against the girl who told false stories about you in high school or the guy who stole your parking space when you had been waiting for one for a long time. It is relatively easier to let these incidences pass as they slowly become the stories of the past that you laugh about.

But, there are things, other things that happen to us and that remain imprinted in our hearts, like being a victim to a crime or being betrayed by a loved one. Such incidences leave a deep impact on your being. To be able to forgive these acts, we need to find in our hearts the power to let go of the resentment, the anger and the desire for revenge. Often, the pain we feel on such acts overpowers our power to think and we react in a way which leads to deterioration of our relationships so significantly that the damage so done becomes irreversible.

Anger takes away our understanding and when we make decisions in such state of mind, the results can be disastrous for the other person as well as us.

Why should we forgive?

The most important question is not how to, instead why to forgive?

We should forgive for our own mental liberation. Forgiveness is a gift you give to yourself. Remember, forgiveness is a virtue of the brave.

The longer we hold a grudge, the heavier is its burden on our mind and soul. When we can fill our thoughts with love and positivity, why should we let the negativity and hatred take hold of a considerable space?

Forgiveness frees the guilty of the sin and yourself of the hatred. It helps you move on with your life with a clearer mind and a healthier heart.

Always remember, to forgive is divine.

How to forgive?

It’s difficult to decide to forgive someone but not impossible. We all hurt someone in our lives, some mildly and some deeply, be it through our remarks or our actions. We all seek forgiveness for the acts we’ve indulged in.

Develop empathy, try to understand the feelings of the person who has hurt you and who now seeks your forgiveness. Put yourself in their place and decide.

Remember, when you choose to forgive those who have hurt you, you take away their power.

Forgiveness doesn’t mean that you have to behave as if nothing went wrong, it means that things did go wrong but you chose to be the bigger person and forgave.
